The daily walk, Mill Lane
The daily walk, Mill Lane

I have walked this way a hundred times
since lockdown. Although painted in the early autumn it is of the walk I describe below.

On the other side of the dung heap now
After a walk over the the wide, flat empty fields
Chocolate brown furrows six feet apart
A sociable distance.
Watching far away hares
It seems in the throws of March madness.
We- railing at our neglect of mother nature
And what we have brought upon ourselves.
She- rewarding us with sight two Chinese water deer
Fearfully hugging the hedge line
stationary, wide eyed.
We gazed respectfully, apologetically.
Then, for lack of gin and tonic
We separated at the garden gate
Melting away like the frightened deer
Back in to our solitary confinement .
